In 1931 the Addo Elephant National Park (about 5 000 ha) was proclaimed when there were only eleven elephants left. The area was inadequately fenced and the movement of elephants continued to cause problems on surrounding Addo farmland. Elephants were killed as a result of conflicts with farmers and collisions with trains.

Addo Elephant is situated 72km by road from Port Elizabeth and is a must visit for outdoor and wildlife enthusiasts. The Addo Elephant national Park was established in 1931 to save 11 Elephants on the brink of extinction.
